NC State Fair News

NC State Fair News

What an AMAZING week! After the great news of 1st Place from last weekend’s Watercolor Society of North Carolina Exhibition, I was hoping to receive a call from the NC State Fair with good news about my entries for this year. However, Hurricane Michael had other ideas and came roaring through first. So, with no electricity for several days, wifi or phone service, I had no idea of the results. Then while pumping water out of our basement Thursday morning (at 4 AM!) I was finally able to check e-mail and Facebook.

To my complete surprise and amazement, someone had posted the photos below that informed me that I had been awarded ‘Best of Show’ for “The Lady of Catalana” and ‘Best North Carolina Scene’ for “Fall Beauty on the Blue Ridge.”

Both can be seen during the annual Orange County Open Studio Tour--November 3rd, 4th, 10th, and 11th. http://ocagnc.org/

WSNC weekend in West Jefferson:

Amazing! What a memorable weekend in West Jefferson at the Watercolor Society of North Carolina Annual Juried Exhibition! First, along with several other members, I was honored (and humbled) to be awarded ‘Master Signature Status’.

Then I was truly honored to receive the 1st place award for my painting, “Lights, Camera, Reflection”, by well-known painter, workshop instructor and juror, Iain Stewart. (below) This award coming from Iain is quite meaningful because I have appreciated his ability and work for many years.

Congratulations to all of the participating artists—and a BIG “thank you” to all of the volunteers who worked SO hard to carry the weekend. On top of that, “Lights, Camera, Reflection” is moving to a new home after the show…Sold! I am SO thankful and I take none of this for granted.

Special Mention of Jury to: David Stickel

The Biennial International Prize "Fabriano Watercolour 2018"

The Biennial International Prize "Marche d'Acqua" Fabriano Watercolour, established on 2010 by the City of Fabriano - UNESCO Creative City and realized by his Paper and Watermark Museum, is awarded to international Artists who applies Watercolour techniques on paper.

The main purpose of the Fabriano's biennial prize is to encourage and spread a love of watercolour painting on real handmade paper by involving ad inviting only the finest of practicing artists.

This was achievable through the members of the jury panel making their four nominations only choosing those artists that they believe to be of a high international standing and not just because they are friends, fellow countrymen or members of their own association of artists.

Reflecting on Reflections David's Article in American Watercolor Magazine

Reflecting on Reflections

David's Article in American Watercolor Magazine

Reflections are a huge part of our visual diet. They’re everywhere … a store window, the hood of a car, a wet sidewalk, or a puddle in the street after the rain. They can be complex or simple—but they undoubtedly add a huge dimension to what each of us sees every single day.

I’m not always drawn to the most complex compositions, but I do love the challenges they present. My job is to make them appear as convincing as possible. I work from my own photos, where I’m able to capture these fleeting images in glass or water. In France, my wife once translated for me what several locals were saying as they watched me shoot photos of store windows: “What does he see? What is he looking at?”

Splash 16

Fun (and exciting) thing that happened to Sean and I recently was the release of Splash 16 which we both have paintings included. The editors said they've had a husband and wife team get accepted in the same edition...but this was the first time for a father & son.

And I like the last part of the caption printed by Sean's painting (he wrote it)... "......... My eye has always been drawn to reflections, an interest I developed from my father, David Stickel, also featured in this book (see page 66). He is known as the Artist of Reflection. I have a fantastic teacher."

David: "Window Watching"

Sean: "Reflections of the Hood"

Work featured in "The Art of Watercolor"

WATERCOLOUR NO. 14 /MARCH-MAY 2014

I received an international magazine in the mail, "The Art of Watercolor" (printed in English and French) of which I'm one of the featured artists. (I have a copy of the Contents page at the download link.)

"Colour and light are at the heart of our new spring issue: artists Susan Harrison-Tustain and Janine Gallizia share their best-kept secrets to enhance and create harmony in your paintings. City landscapes, whether it be Venice, New York or London, are also the focus of painters Kazuo Kasai, Sandra Walker and David Stickel, whose work more particularly dwells on the rendering of window reflections. Plus Stephen Scott Young's watercolour and etching portraits, Mark Mehaffey's both abstract and figurative works, and Rose Edin's trip to Egypt."

CONTENTS:

• 1st edition of the World Watercolour Competition: what’s in store.

• International news: Watercolour events from all over the world.

• Societies around the world: Couleurs d’ailleurs, France.

• Readers’ letters: our answers to your questions!

Just Released! "Splash 13: Alternative Approaches"

Again, I'm very fortunate to have made the ''Splash'' Winners List!

It's always an honor to be included in next 'Splash' book. This makes my 4th 'big splash', with the acceptance of "Afternoon Stroll-Ocean Isle" scheduled for inclusion in "Splash 15" sometime in 2013. I'm encouraged to be one of 115 artists selected to appear in Splash 13: Alternative Approaches! This year’s winners were selected by Rachel Wolf and the team of judges from over 1600 beautiful watercolor entries!

"Sweet Southport", a store-front window scene from the beautiful, picturesque NC coastal town of Southport -- was chosen. Look closely...or you might miss the two vehicles in the window reflections. In addition, another favorite, AWS award winner, "Light Years". was accepted and added to the on-line Link: Splash 13 Bonus PDF.
